Waddell Low Table by Theodore Waddell for Cassina
The Waddell Low Table (Model 713) is an iconic, ultra-lightweight coffee table designed by American architect and designer Theodore Waddell in 1973 and produced by the prestigious Italian furniture manufacturer Cassina. Famous for its radical visual weightlessness, the table is a masterclass in architectural engineering, directly inspired by Buckminster Fuller's principles of tensegrity (tensional integrity). The "Floating" Illusion: The structure operates on dynamic tension and compression. Some steel struts push upward to support the glass top without touching the floor, while others rest firmly on the ground without ever touching the tabletop. No Inter-connectivity: The metal bars act strictly as compression components separated by tie rods. They never directly connect or touch each other. The base supports a circular, heavy tempered crystal glass top with a delicately bevelled underside, emphasizing the minimalist and sculptural.
